With baby on board, travelling can be a little tricky especially when you’re headed far from home. Packing for baby alone feels like a handful — figuring out what you need, exactly, and maximizing your baggage allowance without having to bring the entire house with you.

Experience taught me that the lighter you travel, the easier your life will be. Consider your mobility as you navigate through your destination. There’s nothing more stressful than lugging around heavy bags and gears in between train rides, long walks and unfamiliar roads.

Expecting long walks under the sun? Bring Mustela sunblock for baby.

Truth is you don’t need to haul so many things for the little one, other than a few essentials and select items that can conveniently serve its purpose even when you’re in transit.

Metro Mom recommends Chicco's anti-mosquito lotion for babies.

Another baby essential. Chicco’s anti-mosquito lotion.

For baby’s bed, bath and beyond, you can actually choose between bringing and buying. On our travels, we make sure we bring a small first aid kit, muslin blankets, changing mat, travel-size body wash, nappy cream, toothpaste, toothbrush, wet wipes, sanitizer, anti-mosquito lotion and sunscreen. You can bring a bunch of diapers, of course — but not a lifetime supply. You can buy those extra nappies and wet wipes when you get to your location, along with baby’s distilled water and other feeding necessities.

Grooming and dental kit from Chicco.

Wardrobe picks should follow climate conditions. It’s best to check on the expected weather during the period of your visit. Have a jacket ready in the bag, and use it to keep baby warm during the flight.

If you think it’s more practical to bring bathing essentials instead of buying them abroad, make sure you get the ones in travel-size.

Breastfeed if you can. If you don’t, you also do not need to bring a whole set of bottles. Bring one or two for the road, and some handy cleaning essentials. The small Oxo Tot bush set, Milton sterilizing tablets and the UV Care pocket sterilizer really do wonders for modern day parent-travellers. We can clean bottles and spoons anywhere there’s water and sink.

I never travel without Oxo Tot bottle cleaning brushes, Milton sterilizing tablets and UV Pocket sterilizer.

Flights can also exhaust and bore babies. Better be ready little knick knacks to entertain and distract them. My one-year old tot loves her finger puppets and crinkles, and they fit perfectly in any pocket of our diaper bag. Snacks and healthy bites can also keep your baby full and calm.

Crinkle books and finger puppets are just few of the travel-friendly toys that can keep your baby occupied during long-haul flights.

Wear your baby, if you’re comfortable using a carrier. It’s so convenient to move around with, especially when you navigate stairs and rough roads. My husband and I got two carriers from Infantino — the Carry-On multi-pocket and the Zip. While the Carry-on comes in handy because of its storage space and compartments, we bring the Zip for our travels because it’s lightweight and it can fold into a small fanny pack which you can stow in your bag or wear around the waist. Both have strong, comfortable and ergonomic seat and support.

A travel-friendly stroller is also a good investment. There are a lot available in the market. These are the ones that are lightweight and easy to fold, unfold and carry. You can repurpose them as a child’s seat during feeding time and a bag cart while you got baby in your arms. My suggestion is to get stroller with a rain cover, in case of downpour.

Remember, tips for trips will work when you plan ahead and make sure you have what you need. Other than that, just enjoy the new memories you’ll make with the family. Have fun and make sure to take capture those moments for baby to see in the future.
