I’ve always been a fan of Kate Spade’s playful sophistication and colorful prints. Her bold, fun and fresh aesthetics resonated joy and energy, and added color to any cosmopolite’s dynamic lifestyle.
It didn’t come as a surprise to friends that I chose Kate Spade’s colorful plains and prints as style inspiration for my wedding back in 2014. Aside from my love for the brand, its aesthetics is reminiscent of the fun, quirky, colourful, adventurous, exciting and meaningful life my husband and I shared since we got together.
Being the DIY-fanatic that I am, I got myself busy making our wedding invitation, giveaways, and even some of the table accents. I also made paper boutonnieres for the men and paper bouquets for the women in the entourage. The flower girls carried origami flowers and each of them got a neckpiece with hand-sewn fabric flowers.
Handmade wedding: Tips and things I learned from my experience
If you’re aiming for a unique touch, any DIY project can help enhance your wedding’s overall visual impact. Some find it tedious, especially if you only have a short period of prep time ahead of you. However, there are still so many simple but useful things you can make from scratch and turn into decorative treasures. Going the DIY route may save you money for other things, like food and photography.
There are, however, some factors you might want to consider before you get those paper, scissors and pen. You have to be realistic about how long each project will take to complete and you have better start early. Check your resources and choose only those that are doable for you. Know what you’re good at and start with items you can easily handle. There are items which are too challenging to make, you might end up losing time over trial and error. Some begin with stationery and invites, or simply writing down names on the envelopes and the table guide. You can also personalize giveaways for your entourage. Say, functional gifts like bow ties for the groomsmen.
When channeling the Martha Stewart in you, the key is finding a good balance between doing it yourself and seeking help from others — whether hiring professionals or enlisting friends and family. A “crafternoon” with friends is one way of getting everyone to bond and be part of the wedding of the preparations. You can also turn it into a weekly gathering with family. Make the most out of the time you have and make this whole experience fun and memorable for you and everyone in your team.
