Belle of the Ball

Eighteen-year-old Cecilia Pauliño Reta, the youngest daughter of Rodolfo Cardoza Reta and Jessieden Pauliño-Reta, has been attending the Hijos de Davao ball since she was just 12 years old. Through the years, the annual civic event has taught her the value of community relations and family ties.

“The first time I participated in the Hijos de Davao ball was also my first try at dancing. Together with select kids from other families, we were asked to perform a number. I remember how happy I was to meet new friends during dance practices,” shared this beauty who belongs to the sixth generation of the Bangoy-Bustamante-Alzate-Suazo clan, also a granddaughter of Cornelio Bangoy Reta, Jr. and Rosie Cardoza Reta.

“My fondest memories of Hijos de Davao would be the dance practices for the 50th anniversary celebration back in 2014, as well as my first modelling experience at the 2017 fashion show. It’s so exciting to part of a big group and try something new while having fun. New friendships are built and old ones are strengthened. There were times when I’d meet relatives I never knew before, and it’s heartwarming that we were able to build a connection from there. Every event feels like a huge family gathering where everyone who comes in feels welcome.”

This year, the statuesque sports enthusiast is not only geared to finish senior high at Davao Christian High School, but also introduced to society as the face and muse of the 54th Hijos de Davao.

Her mom, Jess, is proud to see her step into the role as muse, representing their family.  “While she is the darling of our family, Cecilia is wise beyond her years—strong willed and full of determination. She aspires to be a doctor someday, while pursuing her other passions and interests such as music.”

She also hopes Cecilia will be a good influence to the young ones in the community. “She is compassionate, talented and responsible. She is able to relate to and connect with people of different backgrounds and interests. I constantly remind her to be kind, thoughtful, and respectful. I hope she continues to do her best so her dreams will turn into reality, and that she’ll also get to help and contribute in the development of the society.”

The muse is optimistic about the future of the Hijos de Davao organization. “Hijos de Davao will continue to evolve, with new programs and movements initiated by new members and the next generation. This organization has made its mark in Davao City and everyone involved is wholeheartedly eager to spread the warmth, hospitality and generosity of Davaoeños. I am an advocate for women empowerment and, someday, I would want to initiate programs or projects to protect and support women, especially in the field of health.”

Escorting Cecilia to this year’s ball is Brandon Chad Cody Tuano–Gahol, son of Ricardo and Lucille Gahol. He is a graduate of De La Salle University, with a degree in Bachelor of Science in Commerce (BSC) – Applied Corporate Management, and works as a Wealth and Investment Manager at the Trust Department of Union Bank.
