Milk and mommy

Breast milk is the best choice of nourishment for your baby. Aside from it being economical and practical, its health benefits extend from infancy all the way to a child’s formative years.

Milk supply is one big concern of every nursing mama. Each breastfeeding journey is as different as pregnancy and childbirth vary with each mom.  Some have fully-stacked milk tanks with supplies that can last for 6 months or more, while there are those who struggle to produce even just a few ounces enough for one feeding. It’s no wonder a mom’s milk is called liquid gold.  Breastfeeding is definitely no walk in the park — it is physically and emotionally demanding. But, at the end of the day, it is a rewarding and fulfilling experience, and its advantages really do outweigh all the challenges.

“Keeping a positive mindset and attitude is one of the keys to enjoying your breastfeeding journey,” explains Kristal Lynn Separa Macuto, a mompreneur from Davao and a breastfeeding advocate. “You have to also embrace and understand the process. Keep in mind that the baby’s latch is the ultimate driver in producing milk because it follows the law of demand and supply. When the body senses the baby’s latch, it will then produce and supply more milk in order to meet the demand. A correct latch also helps as this will allow the baby to ‘drain’ each breast, which then signals the demand to produce milk.”

“Next to malunggay (soup, drinks, or capsules), moms nowadays stock up on lactation treats which are packed with galactagogue — a substance which can boost milk production,” she adds.

Kristal is the owner of Mommycuddle Hub, an online site offering breastfeeding essentials, plus her homemade lactation treats ranging from cookies, brownies and cupcakes.

“I started Mommycuddle Hub because I strongly believe in the importance of breastfeeding. I am a Breastfeeding Pinay Peer Counsellor and I helped organize the Hakab Na! Davao 2017. Through Mommycuddle Hub, I am also able to reach out to the community by sponsoring activities such as LATCH Davao’s Best Beginnings class.”

“I know that low milk supply is one of the biggest problems most breastfeeding moms encounter, and I, too, went through the same ordeal while raising my little ones. Learning from experience, I want to help and motivate breastfeeding moms by providing them with solutions and alternatives which can aid them in their journey — from lactation drinks and treats, to breast milk storage bags, breast pump, ice sheet, cooler bag, nursing scarf, baby wearing wrap, and many more.”

“Baking and selling lactation treats is my way of sharing the joy and sweet rewards of breastfeeding. It was bit difficult for me, at first, to perfect all recipes. I had to do a number of trial and error before achieving the right mix. Some of the galactagogues I use have an overbearing flavour which leaves a strange after taste if you use too much of it. On the other hand, if you use only a small amount, it may not produce the desired effect in lactation. I had to study the correct amount and combination of galactagogues, in order to achieve the desired taste and for the treats to work its magic. I’m so happy that I have now expanded my menu with a new variety of cookies, cupcakes and brownies to satisfy every mom’s craving.”
